The expression “if you build it, they will come” does not apply to websites or blog posts. I often hear from frustrated business owners and bloggers that after creating the most beautiful blog and writing compelling, helpful blog posts, their blog doesn’t get many visitors. They struggle to drive traffic to their blog which can really impact engagement and revenue earned from sales and/or brand sponsorships.
If your blog is experiencing low readership and is a virtual ghost town, aside from your mom and bestie, then you’ll want to check out these 5 tips on how to increase blog traffic! Oh and you’ll want to snag my FREE blueprint on how to structure your blog to make (more) money.
5 Ways to Boost Blog Traffic
1) Write Quality Content & Click-worthy Titles
So, there’s a reason click-bait exists! Eye-catching, scroll-stopping titles and headlines work to capture a reader’s interest inspiring them to click the link and visit the article resulting in an instant boost in website traffic! Now, let’s be clear, I’m not suggesting you create misleading headlines only to get the click, I’m instead recommending that you determine topics that your audience is interested in and writing a strong title that evokes some sort of emotional response, is shocking in some way, or that dispels a myth.
When writing a new blog post, consider covering a trending topic, take an interesting angle, or focus on answering a question your audience may have. It’s a good idea to do a combination of evergreen content (topics that remain relevant months or years later) and timely content. When the post is relevant and resonates with your audience, they are more likely to share on their social platforms or with friends. Include high quality images to break up text and avoid super long blocks of text as content should be as easy to consume as possible. Pair quality content with a headline that piques the interest of your audience, and you’ll get more click throughs to your blog post!

2) Share on Social Media
Okay, I hear the groans now… like DUH, right? But the key is to share a blog post more than once, in a number of different ways and on various platforms. Not everyone who follows you sees your posts on a daily basis and not everyone who follows you reads your captions. Perhaps they only watch your Stories or they don’t like long captions. Whatever it may be, assume people have not seen your post and share multiple times.
Depending on your content or seasonality of your topic, each blog post should be turned into 6-12 social posts by following a step by step process. For example, when you’re done creating a blog post, batch schedule social media posts for 1 day, 15 days, 30 days, 2 months, 4 months, etc. out for each platform. The format can vary but focus on those that result in high engagement (like Carousel posts, Meme Instagram Feed posts, Instagram Stories, etc.) and visibility (such as Reels, TikToks and Pins).
If you write your captions and design your Pins and graphics immediately after you finish writing the blog post, the content will be fresh in your mind AND your future self will thank you for filling your content marketing calendar a few months in advance and being so organized! Remember to share your post with a good hook or to leave them wanting more info and include a call to action with a link to drive traffic to your blog.
3) Harness the Power of SEO
SEO can sound daunting and overwhelming but I assure you, it’s not that difficult to learn how to do it yourself! In fact, I just launched the Organic Growth Formula group training program to teach entrepreneurs and content creators how to steadily work towards ranking in Google to get more visibility, increase website traffic and revenue with SEO.
There are 2 parts of SEO, on-site and off-site; on-site SEO is where you implement specific elements on your website to help Google understand what your website is about and serve your site when people search for keywords related to your business or content. This is where I recommend most bloggers and businesses starting! Off-site SEO is where you take actions to build links pointing to your site such as getting reviews and features on other sites.
To optimize your blog for SEO, you’ll want to do keyword research to see which terms or phrases people are searching for in relation to your niche, content pillars and offerings. Once you have an idea of which keywords you want to include, you’ll want to include those keywords in your titles, body copy, image alt text and more! Taking time to optimize your blog and each blog post for SEO will drive traffic to your blog for YEARS! I have clients who continue to get a large amount of traffic from blog posts written years ago which means SEO is working in the background to drive traffic to their site without them having to do actively do anything. That’s a MAJOR bonus!
4) Build Your Email List
You’ve probably heard this many times but email marketing is extremely effective to engage directly with your audience! Unlike Instagram or other social media platforms, email marketing is algorithm proof so when you share something like a blog post via email, it’ll actually end up in your audience’s inbox. That means your content will get more visibility and engagement which is good for getting more sales, brand collaborations and revenue.
Building your email list can be done steadily and authentically by inviting followers on social media platforms to opt-in and giving them incentive to sign up like getting first access to new content or exclusive content for insiders only. Add the opt-in link to your Instagram bio, Pinterest about section and/or YouTube video descriptions.
If you want to take a more active approach to building your list, create a freebie/lead magnet like a checklist or guide that only subscribers will receive. To determine the best topic for your freebie, consider frequently asked questions from your audience and do a poll to see if it would be of interest. Once you’ve created it, add a pop-up to your website so that when people land on your website, they are offered the opportunity to get your helpful guide. Once you publish a new blog post, make it a part of your process to send a newsletter promoting your new post.
5) Contribute to Other Blogs
Guest blogging on other blogs may seem counterintuitive because you’re trying to drive traffic to your blog, not someone else’s! However, writing content for another blog will give you more exposure and reach a new audience that you otherwise wouldn’t have connected with. Having a feature on another blog that links to yours is not only good for your SEO but you’ll also reap the benefits of any marketing activities that brand is doing to promote their blog. They’ll likely share the blog post on their social media channels and with their newsletter subscribers resulting in more brand awareness and opportunities to build your audience.
To find guest blogging opportunities look for complementary brands that write on a similar topic but where you could lend your expertise or perspective. Or seek out businesses that align with your values and that you use regularly. If you love their products or services, why not reach out and pitch a how-to do x using y or how to style x with y, etc. Start connecting with other bloggers and businesses and you’ll be surprised at the various ways to help cross-promote each other to your respective audiences.
